Archer Teams Fall Into Winter

Success in Fall Season Creates Momentum for Winter Teams

After unprecedented success during the Fall season, The Archer School for Girls sports program has moved into basketball and soccer season with high hopes. Archer's soccer team returns three "All-League” players, Caitlin M. '18, Rachel P. '17, and Liadan S. '17, from last year’s varsity team. The 2016 team finished 8-7-4 overall, with a 5-0-3 mark in the league to win the Liberty League championship for the second time in three years and qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs. Under the new CIF-SS playoff grouping plan, Archer will be in CIF-SS Division 6 for the 2017 playoffs. All but one player return from the 2016 Archer varsity basketball team that won 11 games, including two if its last three to qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs. Dani R. '18, a 2016 “All-League” selection, joins captains Joyce B. '18 and Alex F. '18 as the girls look to contend for the Liberty League title and make a run in the CIF-SS 5A division. The Studio City-based JD Media Group, in conjunction with MaxPreps, produced a 7-minute video covering the unprecedented overall success of the Archer Fall sports teams. Combined with Archer receiving the prestigious CIF-SS Champions of Character award in September, it was quite a Fall.

Archer Graduates Perform in College
Hillary O. '15 Nets a NCAA Title
The Western Washington University Vikings, with Hillary O.'15 on the team, won the NCAA Division II National Championship on Saturday, December 3, with a 3-2 victory over three-time defending champion Grand Valley State in Kansas City, Kansas. Archer soccer head coach Kim Smith was in attendance for what is believed to be the first NCAA title for a former Archer athlete. Hillary is not the only soccer alumna playing in the NCAA. Krysia S. '13 saw significant time as a midfielder for Duke University, a team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I playoffs. Defender Yasmeen N. '15 was the defensive anchor for Swarthmore College, a team that fell in the second round of the NCAA III playoffs. In collegiate basketball, Maia B. '14 is an integral part of the NCAA Division II powerhouse Western Washington Vikings, who are off to a 6-2 start.

League Titles, Tournament Championships, All-League Selections

ARCHER VOLLEYBALL
Varsity finished the season with a 27-5 overall record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS playoffs. The girls also won the championship of the Milken “Dig Pink” Tournament in addition to winning the Liberty League championship with an undefeated 8-0 record. This is the third time in the last five years that volleyball has won the league title. The combined record of all of Archer’s volleyball teams, including the JV and three Middle School teams, was an astounding 51-13 (.828).

ARCHER TENNIS
Varsity tennis put together the best season in recent history with an 11-6 overall record and second place finish in the Liberty League at 8-4. The girls qualified for the CIF-SS playoffs as a “team" for just the second time ever. Mari G. '17 won third place at the league finals, while Liadan S. '17 and Sara R. '17 won the doubles League Championship and qualified for CIF-SS individual playoffs.

ARCHER CROSS-COUNTRY
The cross-country team won seventh place in Division 5 of the prestigious, 150-school Mt. Sac Invitational. The team also finished in third place in the Liberty League Finals, qualifying for CIF-SS prelims. Senior Leyla N. '17 ranked 36th out of 250 runners at the end of the CIF-SS prelims .

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
Each of the three volleyball teams earned a top seed in the Pacific Basin League (PBL) playoffs, going a combined 14-5 on the season. Swimming and cross-country both finished in second place in the PBL. Hailey H. '22 was named “Outstanding Runner” of the league as she won first place in all five of the meets, including the PBL championship finals.
