Archer’s Athletes are Ready for All Challenges and Challengers This Year

Athletic Director Denny Lennon
Classes just began for the student body, but Archer’s Upper School sports teams are already in the middle of their Fall seasons – and they are off to a particularly good start. The Varsity Volleyball team has elevated its play and its schedule, posting a 10-4 overall record so far and finishing third in the recent Viewpoint Tournament. Archer’s Varsity Cross Country team began its season on Thursday and the Tennis program continues to rise, with aspirations to win the overall championship of the Liberty League and advance in the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs.
The CIF-SS sports calendar has moved up a couple of weeks this year and our girls are building on the momentum of the 2017-2018 year when every Athletics team qualified for the playoffs, winning five league titles and advancing to the CIF-SS finals in four sports. Every time they are confronted by a challenge or obstacle, our athletes have answered with continued persistence and success.

Volleyball
The Varsity Volleyball team had a record season last year, finishing 24-8 and winning the CIF-SS Division 7 championship. This year, the team has moved up to Division 6. The team has elevated its play and its schedule, so far posting a 10-4 overall record and a third-place finish in the recent Viewpoint Tournament.

The girls were up for a challenge on Monday, September 17, when they played against the Buckley School, which was the 2017-2018 Division 8 champion. Before the matchup, Buckley was undefeated and ranked ahead of Archer in the latest CIF poll, but our girls defeated four teams in Division 5, which includes Brentwood and Windward. Our Archer girls responded to the challenge against Buckley with a convincing four-set victory and took over first place in the Liberty League with a 4-0 record.

On Friday, September 21, Archer will step up to face Crossroads School, a Division 3 team in Santa Monica. This local game will be an opportunity for the Archer Faithful to support the girls.

Friday, September 21: Archer vs. Crossroads
Crossroads Gym | Archer JV, which is 7-1 overall, will play at 4:00 p.m. and Varsity will play at 5:00 p.m.

Tennis
The Archer Tennis program continues to rise, and this year's team has aspirations of winning the overall championship of the Liberty League and advancing in the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs. The team has played its most competitive non-league schedule ever, stepping up to a tie with (there are no tiebreakers in non-league matches) Viewpoint, Notre Dame Academy, and Crossroads. Two more tough matches await the team before they move into league play next week. On Thursday, Archer will play at Santa Monica High School at 3:00 p.m. before continuing on to face Windward for a 2:30 p.m. Friday match at Mar Vista Park.

Friday, September 21:
Archer vs. Windward
Mar Vista Park at the tennis courts in the southeast corner of Sawtelle and Palms | The first serve is at 2:30 p.m.

Cross Country
Archer’s Varsity Cross Country team began its season on Thursday, September 27, with its first Liberty League meet at Pierce College.
