Varsity Track Team Wins First League Championship

Archer's Varsity Track team won the first track league championship in the School's history on Tuesday, May 1. The team triumphed over seven other schools in the Liberty League finals at John Burroughs High School.
Last season, Archer lost in the league finals by a narrow margin but went on to qualify for the CIF-SS Division 4 finals, finishing in 11th place overall out of 159 schools. This season, the team will be sending eight athletes to the CIF-SS Preliminaries.

"Despite training at two different sites, the girls came together time and again to compete at the highest level," Athletic Director Denny Lennon said.

During Tuesday's meet, 17 athletes achieved personal records in their respective events. The team took first place in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays as well as the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdles. All first-place athletes will represent Archer at the CIF-SS Preliminaries.

Miayunique S. '19, a CIF-SS finalist in the pole vault in 2016 and 2017, gave a record-breaking performance, winning first place in three field events: the pole vault, the long jump, and the triple jump. She also took second place in the high jump. Miayunique alone recorded 38 of the team's 98 points.

Ella R. '21 was asked to compete in the 4x100-meter relay because the team's top sprinter was injured. Despite the lineup, Dominique W. '18EllaStarr B. '21 and Hailey A. '20 pulled effortlessly into first place.

In total, the team collected 14 first-place medals, three second-place medals, and one third-place medal. CIF-SS Preliminaries begin Saturday, May 12.
